Frank Burgen (1943-) is regarded as one of the spokesmen for the New Western West. His novels directly reflect the major issues affecting the present-day western region. Three of his new western novels - The Shawshank Mike (1987), Temptations to Saint Ed and S Brother (1992) and The Absurd Trilogy (1995) should be considered as a whole Because these three novels complement each other in order to shake the existing rigid concept and show its substitute so as to generate strong social repercussions. The creative features of these new western novels are mainly manifested in three aspects: complexity, differentiation and diversity.
