阿瑟·休斯(1832—1915)创作《奥菲利娅》(拱顶布面油画,123.8厘米×68.7厘米)时年仅19岁。画作是根据莎士比亚《哈姆雷特》剧中的一段对白创作的。奥菲利娅被逼疯了——皆因哈姆雷特谋害了她的父亲,且拒绝接受她的爱。此画描绘的是奥菲利娅溺水前的情景。剧中,王后乔特鲁德描述了奥菲利娅之死,这段话就题刻在画框上:
Arthur Hughes (1832-1915) was only 19 years old when he created Ophelia (vaulted canvas, 123.8 cm x 68.7 cm). The painting is based on a dialogue in Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Ophelia was driven crazy - all because of Hamlet murdering her father, and refused to accept her love. This painting depicts the scene before Ophelia drowned. In the play, queen Qouturud describes the death of Ophelia, the inscription on the picture frame:
