Not all the catastrophes come with the sudden onset of a thunderbolt, such as a volcanic eruption or an earthquake. In fact, the murderer that caused the worst catastrophe in world history is a silent, shadowless killer - plague. In the mid-14th century, rats spread the disease widely in Europe. The disease is termed black death, and it is also called lymphatic plague because huge black lymph nodes appear in patients infected with the plague. The plague struck a population already weakened by cold and hunger, and the vast majority of those infected with the plague died within a week. When the pandemic finally ended, it claimed the life of a quarter of Europe’s population.
