The BAM railway across Siberia has developed the world’s largest source of wealth. It is estimated that oil, natural gas, coal, diamonds, gold and other minerals currently sold in Siberia and the Far East account for about 60% of the total Soviet exports. 3000 km long railway was started in 1974, is expected to open to traffic in 1986. A report from the Soviet Union states that the BAM railway will facilitate the development of the world’s largest asbestos mining area. It is located on the side of the South Muya Mountains in Central Siberia, 600 kilometers east of Angarsk.
