报道的粪化石发现于河北省秦皇岛市抚宁县石门寨剖面石炭纪本溪组上部深灰色粉砂质页岩层内.粪化石呈芝麻粒状,两端浑圆、等大,粪粒长2.2mm,宽0.6mm,腹面扁平,背面光滑、微凸,发育一条由串珠状等直径小坑构成的轴向中沟.粪化石呈正弦曲线状的带状集合体产出,多数粪粒具有定向排列,其长轴大都垂直或近于垂直带状集合体的边缘,粪粒在带状集合体内密度分布大体均匀.粪粒的内部保存有未被完全消化的动、植物残渣和以此为生长基形成的大量含硫异形方解石有机矿物集合体.推断其造迹者为细小(数厘米)的杂食性动物,可能为类似于现生的泥鳅或鱼类.造迹动物的排便行为发生在水与沉积物界面之下的沉积层内部.粪化石排出时具有较高的黏度和强度,由于微生物的作用,粪化石的成岩作用发生较围岩早和快.石炭纪本溪组沉积期高的大气氧分压背景、湿热气候条件下淡化的泻湖环境、低水动能、常氧的造迹环境和缺氧、缺少其他宏体生物破坏的特殊埋藏环境使得粪化石得以超常保存.粪化石寄主地层的还原色(深灰色)形成于富氧、高生产力的沉积环境和还原的早期成岩环境.
