全国人民代表大会代表、中国文学艺术界联合会全国委员会委员、中国戏剧家协会常务理事、中国戏曲研究院副院长、著名京剧艺术家、中国共产党党员程砚秋同志因患心肌栓塞症及肺炎不治,于1958年3月9日在北京逝世.程砚秋同志,北京人,生于1904年.他从六岁起拜师学艺,先后向陈德霖、王瑤卿等名师学昆曲、京戏.十七岁即开始独立成班,在各地演出.由于他出身城市贫民家庭,对劳苦群众抱有极大同情.为人刚直不苟,富有正义感,嫉恶如仇,在政治上能够坚持民族气节,抗日战争时北平沦陷后,为了不为敌伪演出,下乡务农.他在封建军阀及国民党反动统治时期,曾先后编写排演反对军阀混战及反映国民党的苛捐杂税压榨下
