Because of the recent emergence of the new avian influenza virus A (H7N9) in the population, many people and governments are now seeking H7 influenza vaccines that provide protection against the cross-protection of new viruses before the H7N9 vaccine is made from the strain. Here, the authors have scientifically demonstrated that the existing live attenuated H7N3 influenza vaccine (LAIV) has a protective effect against the H7N9 virus because of the presence of conserved immunophenotypes in its hemagglutinin.
