这半年来同事们和同学们常常谈到“清华精神”。自己虽然不是清华人,但是在校服务多年,对这个问题也感到很大的兴趣。有一回和一位同学谈话,曾经假定清华精神是“服务”。后来和钱伟长先生谈起,他似乎觉是清华精神是“独立的、批评的”,例如清华人到一个机关服务,往往喜欢表示自己的意见,不甘心苟同。我承认钱先生的看法,连带着他的例子,是有理由的。但是关于“服务”,我还申说一下。提到“服务”,很容易想到青年会。青年会的服务精神有它的好处和缺点,这里不想讨论。我所假定的清华的服务精神,跟青年会的不同。为清楚
In the past six months, my colleagues and classmates have often talked about the “Tsinghua Spirit.” Although he is not a Tsinghua native, he has served in school for many years and is also very interested in this issue.
