Uranium was found in 1915 in the gold-bearing conglomerate of Witwatersrand. However, the first uranium processing plant was opened in Westland in 1952. Since then, a number of other factories have been established. By 1959, South Africa produced 4,954 tons of (metallic) uranium from 27 gold mines and 17 processing plants. Excess uranium production in the world uranium market in 1960-65 closed most of South Africa’s uranium production plants. Only three mills processed 12 ore mines in 1970-74.
