中国美协理事、山东省女书画家协会主席、山东省艺术学院教授单应桂是受人敬重的著名中国人物画画家。她似乎一直是以一种深沉的历史责任感和现代学人的一种文化意识,审视与汲取中华民族民间的风俗人情、生活理念以及艺术良规,并借鉴其他民族民间优良的艺术文化形式,来推进中国人物画由古典文化形态向现代文化形态的逐步转换,最终传达出她对处于不同历史境遇中的人民大众的生活以及命运的深切关怀。著名画家叶浅予先生曾这样评价:“经过中国画专业的训练,一般都愿在宣纸、水墨或绢素重彩方面继续钻研,以便攀登阳春白雪的高峰,可是单应桂走出学院以后却走向了民间,走向下里巴人,这是非常可贵的选择。”
