Objective: To understand the changes of fluid ion content in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Methods: Forty-six patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) were enrolled in this study. The contents of K, Na, Ca and Mg in serum, erythrocytes, leukocytes and 24 h urine were measured. Results: The levels of Ca, Mg, K in erythrocytes, Mg in leucocytes and Mg and Na in serum were significantly decreased in patients with leucocytosis. Erythrocyte Mg was positively correlated with leukocyte Mg. The group of patients with urinary Ca increased 54%, urine K, Na, Mg decreased 92%, 65% and 32% respectively. CONCLUSIONS: There is a deficiency of K and Mg in patients with COPD. It is more practical to evaluate the Mg status of the body with erythrocyte Mg.
