What is Linguistics? The common definition of linguistics is the science of language. This is the definition used in “The New World of Linguistics” (Episode 1); after some refinement, the definition can still be “within its scope” as it was in the past. Of course, the scope is not very wide. The term “linguistics” was first used in the mid-nineteenth century; many scholars who are now engaged in research and teaching in this field may say that this discipline itself is not long after its terminology.
