巩义市地处中原腹地,南依嵩岳,北濒黄河,东瞻河南省会郑州,西望九朝古都洛阳,面积1041平方公里。秦时置县,因“山河四塞,巩固不拔”得名巩县。1991年撤县建市,现辖15个镇、5个街道、2个园区管委会,292个行政村,全市总人口80万,其中城市人口215万,是被赋予省辖市经济管理权限和社会管理权限的扩权县市。巩义市历史悠久,文化灿烂,是华夏文明发祥地的核心地区之一,境内有裴李岗、仰韶和龙山文化遗址70多处,拥有国家文物保护单位4个、省级27个、郑州市级38个、巩义市级51个。其中,距今1500多年的北魏石窟精妙绝伦,其飞天、帝后礼佛图都是国宝级的文物;北宋皇陵是我国现今保存完整的两大帝王陵墓群之一;“中州第一寺”——青龙山慈云寺与“少林共祖,白马同乡”;杜甫故里和杜甫陵园是诗圣杜甫的诞生之所和安息之地。巩义市交通便利,陇海铁路、连霍高速、310国道横穿东西,豫31省道和规划中的焦巩登高速公路纵贯南北,距河南新郑国际机场仅一小时车程。为创建具有深厚经济、文化底蕴的国家园林城市奠定了坚实基础。
