Board on EarthScience convened the GEO chair and executive chairman meeting on February 6, 1987 in Washington DC. About 50 participants attended the meeting, discussing the long-term planning and future issues of geosciences and global geosciences education. The Earth Science Research Association is one of many research councils that acted as advisers to the National Research Council and helped to formulate science policies. Scientists discuss plans to unify and advance geosciences. Some programs have started to take effect, for example, the state's efforts to improve facilities and purchase new equipment at some universities. In April 1986, following a symposium to identify future research areas, a physics and chemistry project on Earth's geophysics under the aegis of the Earth Science Research Institute began.
