Finding Qualified Pilots to Be a Global Challenge Since the retirement age of U.S. pilots was raised from 60 to 65 in 2007, the first large-scale retirement wave is about to begin and the number is expected to rise gradually in the coming years. On the other hand, the new federal regulations will make the supply of pilots more tense. The new federal statute, which will take effect in August 2013, will require all newly hired pilots to have at least 1,500 hours of flight experience just as the captain had before they were hired, with the first copilot requiring only 250 hours of flight experience. Another federal safety regulation, which will take effect early in 2014 to increase the pilots' daily rest, will also stimulate demand for pilots.
