The Ottope Company’s Hammadi copper and zinc mine is located about 25 km south of Joensuu, eastern Finland, about 400 km northeast of Helsinki. In 1983, 412,000 tons of ore were processed and 4000 tons of copper and 1,700 tons of zinc were recovered in the concentrate. The mines were mined from 1973, but it was only recently attracted attention as the world’s first mine to use the new dry-block pre-selection technology studied by Otto- pon. The new ore pre-sorting machine was put into operation at the Hamaladi mine on March 20, 1984, and in June of the same year, the magazine Mining visited the operation of the election machine and its benefits. This article gives a brief account of the Hamaraty copper-zinc deposit, methods of beneficiation and mining and, in particular, preselection and its application to other mines
