彼特·汤姆斯(Peter Perring Thoms,1790—1855),英国汉学家。青年时代在伦敦从事印刷业,1814年来华,在新成立的东印度公司澳门印刷所负责中文铅活字的研制与应用,以协助马礼逊(Robert Morisson,1782—1834)出版《华英字典》(Dictionary of the Chinese Language,1815—1823)。他在中国居住了11年(1814—1825),工作之余熟习汉语和中国文化,并出版多部有关中国的作品。1824年,汤姆斯把《花笺记》首次英译,以“Chinese Courtship,In Verse”为名在澳门的东印度公司印刷所和伦敦的帕伯里、艾伦与金斯伯里(Parbury,Allan and Kingsbury)公司联合出版。本文是对汤姆斯英译《花笺记》的序言部分的翻译。在序言中,汤姆斯通过《花笺记》同《诗经》及《西厢记》的比较,引用古今中外的学者对中国诗歌的评论介绍,较为系统地论述了中国诗歌的风格特色、形式特征、发展历史,介绍了具有代表性的欧洲学者对中国诗歌的研究和翻译状况。这是一篇极有价值的关于中国诗歌的论文,在一定程度上反映了19世纪初期英国汉学界对中国诗歌的研究水平。
Peter Perring Thoms (1790-1855), a British sinologist. In his youth, he was engaged in the printing industry in London and in 1814 came to China where he was responsible for the development and application of the Chinese lead type in the newly established East India Company, Macau Printing House, to assist Morrison (Robert Morisson, 1782-1834) in publishing the Huaying Dictionary Dictionary of the Chinese Language, 1815-1823). He lived in China for 11 years (1814-1825), studied Chinese and Chinese in his spare time and published many works on China. In 1824, Thomas translated English for the first time to “Chinese Courtship, In Verse” at the East India Company Printing Company in Macau and to Pbury, Allen and Kingsbury in London Allan and Kingsbury). This article is a translation of the preamble to Toms’s English translation of “Annotations of Flowers.” In the preface, through the comparison of “Annotations” with “The Book of Songs” and “The Romance of the West Chamber,” Thomas quotes the introduction of Chinese poetry by scholars both at home and abroad, and systematically discusses the style, features and development of Chinese poetry History, introduced the representative of European scholars on Chinese poetry research and translation status. This is an extremely valuable essay on Chinese poetry, to a certain extent, reflects the level of research on Chinese poetry by the British Sinology in the early 19th century.
