We have developed a new high-strength steel (Mitsubishi Corrosion-Resistant Steel) that is used as a propeller to replace the conventional copper alloy. The steel in the sea water fatigue strength is 26 kg / mm ~ 2 ,, higher than the nickel - aluminum bronze. In addition, it also has excellent impact properties. These fine features of the steel have been demonstrated by the basic tests and the results of a large propeller dissection test with a diameter of 4.8 meters made of this material. In addition, a small propeller with a diameter of 1.15 meters was tested on a real ship for more than 3.5 years. The result is good. From these results we can expect the following benefits with this new steel: (1) to improve propeller efficiency and save on sailing costs; and (2) to prevent accidents such as breakage of propeller blades during icing of the ocean.
