聚芳代烷基化合物的研究以往并不很多,文献报导的合成方法多不适用于工业生产。这可能是一类较有前途的碳链高分子,但除了聚对二甲苯外,至今尚未得到广泛应用。 早在1854年,即已观察到苄醇在硫酸、氯化锌等缩合催化剂的作用下能生成树脂样物质,但这一观察没有取得实际应用的效果,因为当时对在反应过程中生成的树脂样物质多被认为是合成低分子量化合物的障碍。近二十年来,虽多次报导了关于获得聚甲苯等的反应或方法,但对芳代烷基醇在多聚磷酸作用下的化学行为却未见详细描述。
