Objective To study the relationship between neonatal birth weight and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nosocomial infection and provide the basis for effective prevention and control. Methods A retrospective and prospective combination of survey methods was used to investigate all the NICU discharged neonates in this hospital in 2007-2008 and 2009-2010. Results The hospital NICU monitored 4 811 discharged newborns in 4 years. 101 cases of nosocomial infection occurred in 106 cases. The nosocomial infection rate in neonates was 2.10% and the infection rate was 2.20%. Neonatal birth weight ≤ 1000 g, the daily incidence of infection was 5.43 ‰; birth weight ≥ 250g, the incidence of daily infection was 1.65 ‰. Conclusions The lower the birth weight of newborns, the higher the incidence of nosocomial infections and the low birth weight infants are the high risk groups of nosocomial infections.
