《嘉莉妹妹》作为20世纪美国著名作家西奥多·德莱赛的代表作,作者以主人公嘉莉为代表,深刻的揭露了美国资本注意制度对贫苦人民压榨的残酷性以及资本主义生活方式对小资产阶级分子的腐蚀性,在当时引起了强烈的反响。但是,对于作品中的主人公嘉莉评价,往往都是批判和指责,甚至全盘否定,而没有充分考虑美国当时的社会文化背景以及作者本身的意图。本文通过对这些因素的综合考虑,对嘉莉进行了更加客观的评价,对当时美国社会背景下,处于欲望都市中的女性形象进行了分析和解读。
