Objective To investigate the relationship between osteoporotic vertebral fractures and bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women. Methods 280 cases of postmenopausal women with osteoporotic vertebral fractures (fracture group) and 280 postmenopausal women without vertebral fracture (control group) underwent lateral radiographs of thoracolumbar spine, BMD and T values of lumbar spine (L2 ~ L4) and left hip were measured by bone mineral density measuring instrument (DEXA). Results The BMD and T values of lumbar spine and hip in fracture group were lower than those in control group (P <0.01). With age, BMD decreased gradually in both groups. Conclusions Osteoporotic vertebral fractures in postmenopausal women are associated with decreased BMD of lumbar spine. The risk of vertebral fractures increases with age. BMD and thoracolumbar X-ray examination should be emphasized in postmenopausal women.
