The “Happy House” of American woman writer Edith Wharton realistically reproduced the life style of the aristocratic bourgeoisie from the end of the nineteenth century to the early twentieth century through the description of the tragic fate of the heroine Lily Barthes, exposing the Mean dirty. Based on the analysis of the influence of Emerson’s “self-reliance” and “supremacy of spirit” on the fate of the heroines, this article analyzes Lily Barthes as the victim of real life, the loser who pursues the “spiritual republic”, the moral and spiritual winner
