Pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A), a large zinc glycoprotein, was described more than 10 years ago by specific radioimmunoassay and was detected in maternal circulation after 28 days of fertilization. Since then, PAPP-A has been unilaterally secreted by the trophoblast into the maternal circulation with a doubling time of 4.9 days. Clinically, a decrease in serum PAPP-A levels can accurately predict early pregnancy failure, further illustrating its relationship to pregnancy. In some cases, circulating PAPP-A levels have been significantly reduced many weeks prior to embryonic death, when ultrasound is normal. Follicular fluid and essence of ovaries before ovulation
