Aluminum in rat brain inhibits intracellular and mitochondrial hexokinase activities with C_ (50) values between 4 and 9 μM. Aluminum plays a role in Wellingol (PH6.8) or weak base (pH7.2 ~ 7.5) in the presence of physiologic levels of magnesium (0.5 mM). Magnesium, at saturation (8 mM), was able to antagonize the inhibitory effect of aluminum on spermine kinase activity in sarcoplasmic reticulum and in mitochondria. Tests showed that aluminum was less sensitive to inhibition of other enzyme activities, with IC50 of 1.8 mM for phosphofructokinase and 0.4 mM for lactate dehydrogenase.
