Before the post-war period of rapid economic growth, Japan first caught the traffic problem, vigorously built high-quality highways and developed road transport. At present, Japan’s road transport has assumed three-fifths of passenger traffic and nine-tenths of freight traffic, far exceeding rail transport. In particular, the expressways built between major cities and major industrial bases have halved Japan’s distance from north to south, which has played a significant role in boosting the economy, promoting urban-rural exchanges and enhancing people’s material and cultural life .
