Background: There have been very few empirical studies of the effects of adolescent self-expression on their motor experience. The purpose of this study is to prospectively investigate the relationship between self-expression of junior high school rugby players and their pre-match emotional state. Methods 112 American football players (mean age 15.57 years old) completed their self-reported attention test (SPSQ), and completed the selective pre-match mental state test (including exertion, confidence, calmness and fear) one week later. Results: Regression analysis revealed that lack of talent for performance was associated with pre-competition distress (b = -0.43, 2adj = 19.5%, P <0.001) and confidence = 11.9%, P <0.01). Conclusion: Positive pre-match mental state is conducive to the athlete’s athletic performance and accumulated experience. Decreasing the focus on self-expression helps to form a positive pre-match mental state.
