Because Chinese characters have different square writing structures and font mapping rules from those of pinyin letters, much research has been conducted on whether there are different reading mechanisms in these two languages, but it is still under debate. This study further explores this problem by using functional magnetic resonance (MRI) techniques, using words (true), hyphen (words), and non-words (words) in both Chinese and English as stimuli. The results show that Chinese characters and English have similar reading mechanism under high-frequency words (words), but their reading mechanism varies greatly when reading fake words. The specific performance of the English pseudophone activated the left margin of the upper back, while the Chinese word activated the left frontal gyrus. The results show that: 1) Chinese and English bilinguals may adopt two different dual-line mechanisms to read Chinese characters and English words. 2) Chinese-English bilinguals must use the margin-recalled brain area for font conversion when reading English fake words. While reading fake Chinese characters, you need to go through the forehead back stroke analysis.
