北宋嘉佑石经的残石和拓本尽管有传世者,但相关文献记载多阙如或语焉不详,关于嘉佑石经经数、刊立、散亡、修复、补刻等问题尚不明晰,本文试爬梳有关史料,探赜索隐。传世拓本经数有九,周密亦有“九经”之说,但真正是北宋刊刻的仅有八经,《孟子》是元初补刻的。传统观点认为嘉佑石经始刊于至和元年,其说非是,实际上大约在庆历元年既已开始。关于嘉佑石经散佚及其流向问题,历来众说纷纭,金人运到燕京的说法本不足取,金国子监也曾刊立石经,不过只有《礼记》、《春秋》二经,金、元二代都曾修复过。元汴梁路儒学建在北宋国子监故址,元世祖时曾修复过那里的嘉佑石经,散亡殆始自元末之乱;明永乐中圮壤于水,所以开封府学易址,石经残石也归于府学新址,景泰中已磨灭破碎;天顺中,再次圮泐于水,但直到正德中还有残石。
