汤普森从发生学的角度出发分析社会发展的历史过程,探讨社会发展的一般理论,认为正是社会历史的动态发展,规定了对立物存在的本质特征。在对社会矛盾的分析中,汤普森逐步形成了他所倡导的社会科学研究的基本方法,即“关系-过程”的思维方式,并把“关系-过程”作为其思想构架的核心理念,从而展现了社会主体的历史价值和社会进步的历史过程,具有重要的方法论意义。
Thompson analyzed the historical process of social development from the perspective of genesis and explored the general theory of social development.
