小五台山位于太行山脉北端,吕梁运动期始成太行山雏形;燕山运动时,形成新华夏式褶皱带;喜马拉雅运动时,由于山体的剧烈抬升和强烈断裂,小五台山形成了以东、西、南、北、中五座山峰为主体的众多山峰和峡谷,其中海拔在2000米以上的山峰有130多座,东、西、南、北、中台等五座山峰,海拔均在2600米以上,主峰东台海拔2882米,为太行山主峰、河北最高峰。
