An important raw material for making agar-agar is the seaweed Gracilaria, which is distributed worldwide but grows mostly in the natural state in warm tropic and subtropic zones. Some countries have tried in small scale to cultivate the seaweed, but only along the coasts of South China has it been done successfully on a large commercial scale (in pond and raft culture).
