曹雪芹的祖父曾是康熙的密奏使,他的密奏中有区域性的天气、粮食价格以及盗匪等问题,这种密奏方式也是康熙管理农业国家辽阔疆域的手段之一江宁织造曹寅熟练地将一方写过字的纸折成复杂的六角形,上面的“报告”是除了皇上康熙以外任何人也不允许看的。这张纸在康熙的手中打开后,是一张10厘米宽、20厘米高的密奏。这种纸从江宁到北京,骑马传递大约要20天左右。这项在曹寅和康熙皇帝之间的秘密传送,一直进行了20年。因此,美国耶鲁大学历史学家史景迂称曹寅为“康熙的密探”。
