17th-century Dutch paintings varied in appearance and rich in output, bringing forth great masters. The masters of arts absorbed the artistic techniques inherited from the past and applied them in a very personal way and became the signature of their works. This article interprets and contrasts the brush strokes of three 17th-century Dutch masters in seeking the uniqueness and permanent value of their artistic qualities. Vermeer inherited the fine brushstrokes closely hidden by the masters of his predecessors and built a vague story space. Hals pioneered the visual value of the brush strokes, which realistically restored the texture of the material and created a continually-tense and tense picture. His brushwork gives way to the overall sense of the picture. By precisely constructing detailed changes in color and light and shade, the arrangement of light occupies a dominant position in the picture. People and things in the whole picture melt into bright lights of spiritual significance.
