In a recent article in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers report that lowering the body temperature of infants at risk of brain injury can help prevent such injuries on a sustained basis. A team led by Denis Azzopardi, a neonatologist at King’s College London, UK, lowered the temperature of 145 full-term infants born after 36 weeks of gestation. These infants are hypoxic at birth and therefore have a risk of brain damage. Within 6 hours of birth, the researchers lowered their temperature to 33 ° C to 34 ° C for 72 hours. This technique is thought to improve the quality of life of infants - suffering from brain damage before they toddler, but other longer-term benefits are not yet clear.
