Official figures for the year 1982/83 and estimates for the year 1983/84, which ended on 30 June, show that the economic situation in Bangladesh has been slightly improved. Bangladesh remains one of the least economically advanced countries in the world; according to official estimates, 80% of its population (93.6 million in 1983) lives in poverty. Per capita national income has increased by a total of 6% in recent years, compared with $ 165 in 1983. According to the plan of the country’s planning committee, per capita national income will reach a maximum of 206 U.S. dollars in 1990 and 358 U.S. dollars in 2000.
