以北大倡導的白話文及反禮教思想爲假想敵,1930年代異軍突起的輔仁大學在陳垣、余嘉錫的主導下逐漸形成有自家面目的文史之學:在教學方法上主張從目錄學入手,并注重培養學生的國文根基;在治學取向上漢宋兼容,以考據見長但又不止於考據而已,肯定宋明理學敦士節、正人心的作用。七七事變後,輔仁的文史傳統應時而變,轉向援古證今的“表微”之學,在詩史考辨中寄托心事。基於陳垣、余嘉錫諸人在治學路徑上的高度契合,及其弟子柴德賡、牟潤孫、周祖謨、啓功、余遜等在研究領域甚至論文選题上的繼承性,或可將這批聚合於輔仁的文史學者視爲一個潜在的學派。
