前些年在西安听过这样一个故事:从前,有对教师夫妇,某日在公共汽车上看到小偷行窃,就轻轻碰了事主一下,用眼光提醒他警惕。小偷见好事被搅,对这夫妇恨之入骨,一路怒目相向。教师夫妇胆小,不敢回视小喻,车到站,匆忙下来,赶着回家。谁知小偷不肯放过他们,跟下车,跟着走。教师夫妇非常害怕,担心小偷冲上来行凶,但他却不上来,只是远远跟着。他们走多快,他也走多快,一路怒目相向。小偷这一跟,教师夫妇吓得不敢回家了,怕他记下地址以后报复。走啊走啊,教师夫妇越来越害怕。天色渐渐暗了,小偷还是鬼影子一样缠着他们。这对胆小善良的夫妻想不出摆脱恐惧的办法。终于,在小偷的目光里,两人一起跳进了护城河。这个故事流传于茶间饭后的闲聊里,真实性很值得怀疑:难道两位受过高等教育的成年人理智竟会这么轻易被恐惧所淹没,他们不会去求助于警察?自己的亲朋?甚至是路人?而且,小偷是单独一个,即使是搏斗,他们还有着二比一的优势,怎么就自己先崩溃了呢?西安是有条人工修建的护城河,环绕着被当地人引以为豪的仿古城墙。但在我印象里,这河淤泥当道长期缺水——就算是有水,要爬过高高的护栏跳进河,也得费一番周折。可怜的夫妻虽说慌不择路,却似乎不必如此耐心地把自杀安排得像某种仪式。
