The UCSD Research Information Infrastructure (RCI) project aims to provide long-term, high quality service to faculty and staff in the areas of central storage, hosting, computing, data management, networking and technical services. Between September 2012 and February 2013, the RCI Data Services (RCIDS) conducted a series of interviews with teachers and senior staff to determine the requirements for data storage and prioritization of work. The interviews involved 29 separate divisions and research institutes in San Diego with 50 different groups representing more than 600 researchers. The data of these research groups, from human genome sequences, marine natural products, to cosmic simulation experiments, are shared with millions of users around the world. Based on the results of these interviews, we summarize 10 requests for data services from researchers in San Diego and five existing challenges and risks. RCIDS proposes deploying Network Attached Storage (NAS) data services first in a sustainable business model; then further servicing plans will be identified through further discussions and consideration of emerging cloud computing technologies; and finally, The ongoing implementation of e-science infrastructure for higher education, cloud-based data services, and lessons learned provide extensive discussion.
