严复主要是继承了中国传统工具论语言观,并未将“言”和“意”视为不可分割的整体,他认为中西文化、语言有着根本上的相通。这种乐观主义让他相信秦汉古文能够更好地翻译西书;在译名的翻译上更多采用了“格义”的方法;在表达效果上则有一个“雅”的追求。严复翻译策略与他的语言观有着非常密切的关系。
Yan Fu mainly inherited the traditional viewpoints on the language of Chinese instrumentalism, and did not regard “language ” and “meaning ” as an indivisible whole. He believed that there is a fundamental connection between Chinese and Western cultures and languages. This optimism led him to believe that the ancient Qin and Han dynasties could better translate the Western books. In the translation of the translated names, the more the method of “Geyi ” was used; the more the effect of expression was the pursuit of “Ya ”. Yan Fu’s translation strategy has a very close relationship with his linguistic view.
