罗甸县,是布依族、苗族聚居的山区,过去,这里山高、天小、地窄,人也穷。早年,搞果蔬专业的人,分配到这里,有的改行了,有的调走了。1964年贵州农学院毕业,分配在省农科院园艺所工作的女助理研究员李桂莲,却从166公里外的省城贵阳跑到罗甸,何苦?说起来这是几年前的事了。1979年,李桂莲作蔬菜生产考察时来到罗甸,这里六个区海拔在400米左右,年平均温度19～20℃
