在六十年代,FORD车厂曾经想买下赛车名厂法拉利,以图踏足Le Mans(勒芒)赛场,但Enzo Ferrari不从,收购因此没有达成。FORD也只有另谋出路,自行研制出一辆中置引擎的超级跑车GT 40。此车亦不负所望,在Le Mans赛事中击败劲敌法拉利,为美国吐气扬眉。 2003年值FORD一百周岁纪念,FORD车厂重提GT 40,尽管财政压力巨大,车厂还是毅然决定再续这段GT传奇。新的GT仍保持原车的扁平轮廓,车后的“鸭尾”造型,更是点题之作。不过,新车的每一项细节,每一个线条和弧度,每一方面的尺寸,都是经过重新修订而并非一成不变地沿袭。新车比原版1966年款长30多厘米、高度增加约10厘米。颀长的车头很有六十年代的跑车格调,而细微的饰纹和光纤头灯则突显了它的现代气质。
