Not only is Eugene O’Neil’s drama creation far-reaching in the United States, it is considered the founders of the modern American drama and enjoys a high international reputation. He has read many books on Greek mythology and Greek tragedy, and has a deep interest in the Greek tragedy. In O’Neill’s tragedy creation, he not only inherited the traditional ancient Greek tragedy ideas, spirits, performance techniques and many other factors, but also boldly reform them and created an independent tragedy style. Taking O’Neill’s three famous works as “Mao Ao”, “Emperor Jones” and “The Desire Under the Elms” as examples, this paper explores the use of O’Neill’s tragedy to reference and reform the ancient Greek tragedy in order to reveal and help readers further Understand O’Neill’s unique drama style.
