环境问题是被现代社会广泛的关注的事,但杜威在他的时代就已经敏锐地意识到,尽管人类在不断进步,但他仍然居住在一个禁止滥用的环境中。杜威认为,道德不仅是人类社会的事情,整个自然界,包括物理的和生物的环境都有道德蕴含,因为整个有机体和自然界就是一个相互作用的系统整体,那些对人类社会所作的道德思考同样适合于非人类的自然环境,因此,我们对环境的责任不是因为环境具有内在价值,而是一种道德整体观的必然要求。杜威的伦理学经过很小的调整后可以作为环境伦理学的基础。
Environmental issues are a matter of widespread concern in modern society, but Dewey was acutely aware during his time that despite the progress of mankind, he still lived in an environment that was abusive. Dewey believes that morality is not only a matter of human society, but morality of the entire natural world, including the physical and biological environments, because the whole organism and nature are an integrated system of systems. The moral reflections on human society are equally applicable to Non-human natural environment, therefore, our responsibility to the environment is not because of the intrinsic value of the environment, but a necessary requirement of a holistic view of morality. Dewey’s ethics can be used as the basis of environmental ethics after a small adjustment.
