The hand-held, battery-powered (endurance 6.5 hours) Diver Reconnaissance System (DRS) is a further development of a prototype system built under an applied research package for shallow-water mine-countermeasures (MCM) diving. It is designed to enable an MCM diver to simultaneously navigate within a search pattern while locating potential mine contacts with a high-frequency scanning sonar.
The primary search sensor is a forward-looking, electronic scanning (64×1°horizontal beams with a vertical beam width of l0°or 20°), high-frequency (500 kHz) sonar. Typically, this sonar can detect a -25dB target at a range of 230m, The sonar can be configured for obstacle avoidance or target location, and has so far been successfully tested by QinetiQ and UK Royal Navy dive teams for its ability to detect calibrated spheres and realistic mine shapes.
The navigation system uses long-baseline active acoustic transmissions. This requires between two and four acoustic transponders (operating between 40-80kHz) to be positioned on the seabed in known positions to calculate an absolute fix. A navigational accuracy of 50 cm is possible with this technique. The maximum range of the navigation system is up to 1,200m.
"If you want to cover the same swath in the same time as can be done by one DRS-equipped diver, but using the traditional method of laying ropes on the seabed for navigation, you would need 20 or more divers."QinetiQ said.
The DRS has already attracted"serious interest"from l0 navies, and detailed discussions about actual procurement were reported with two European navies. The DRS would be available for approximately EUR l00, 000 (USD 124,000) per unit.
