万福麟,字寿山,光绪六年十月十八日(1880年11月20日)出生于吉林省农安县。祖籍直隶宁河县官庄(今河北省宁河县)。其曾祖万金时,从关内迁往东北,落户长春府。万福麟幼年家境贫寒,少年时便给财主扛活、放牧牛马。十六、七岁开始学农活,因尚未成年,体力又单薄,故乡人称他“万半拉子”。1900年,义和团兴起,沙俄亦乘机入侵东北。农安乡绅为自保安全,商议组建联庄会,要求富户每家出一人、一马、一枪。吕家恐自家子弟当兵有险,便央求万福麟替其应役。万福麟早已厌倦了半拉子活,遂概然应允,即赴农新社联庄会当团丁。联庄会成立不久,便在首领汪希文、李成贵的策划下,拉出为匪,出没于吉林省扶余、前郭旗等沿江地带。不足半年,发展到130余人。恰在此时,驻防在郑家屯的吴俊升派人来招降,该队遂编入吴俊升的靖边军。从此,20岁的万福麟跨入军旅,列为行伍,开始了半个世纪的戎马生涯。
