煤和炭,这两个词在古代是有区别的。炭指用木柴烧成的木炭。《礼经》中记述,秋季“草木黄落,乃伐薪为炭。”唐代大诗人白居易的诗中写道:“卖炭翁,伐薪烧炭南山中。”而煤乃是矿藏,春秋战国时期称为石涅或涅石。战国时代成书的《山海经》中记述:“女儿之山,其上多石涅。”这是我国有关煤的最早记载。从考古可知,六、七千年前的新石器时代,我国先民就开始利用煤作燃料了,在世界各国中居于先进地位。魏晋唐宋时,煤称为石炭,又称石墨。北宋大文学家苏轼在《石
