Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus in Orange County, California, developed resistance to DDT throughout the state in the early 1960s. Shortly after the organophosphate insecticide was used in California in the late 1960s, Culex pipiens pallens also developed resistance to it. The authors investigated the resistance of Culex quinquefasciatus larvae in three remote areas of California to terephos, chlorpyrifos, methyl parathion, malathion, propoxur and DDT. The test mosquitoes were collected from Coachella (strain CV), southeastern Los Angeles (LA strain), and northern San Joaquin valley (strain NC). Drug-sensitive experiments were performed with F 1 and F 2 generation larvae of these wild-type strains. The control strain was collected from San Joaquin in 1950
