A new method of clearing cancer cells from the bone marrow is being tested, this method can eliminate the threat of graft-versus-host disease in patients with leukemia. Fritz Sieber from the University of Wisconsin Medical School in the United States created a new therapy that combines tumor-toxic Merocyanine 540 (M-54o) with bone marrow transplantation, traditional chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. M-540 is a photosensitive chemical that was first developed by Kodak to improve the company’s film response to the spectrum. According to Sieber who accidentally discovered that the chemical may be clinically useful, when exposed to white light, M-540 can also bind to cancer cells and destroy cancer cells.
