Case Study: How Caterpillar Adapts to EPA 2007 The EPA EPA Emissions Act, enacted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, came into effect on January 1, 2007 and will be phased in throughout the United States by 2010. The objective of this regulation is to reduce annual emissions of about 2.6 million tons of nitrogen oxides, reduce emissions of 110,000 tons of harmful gases such as particulates and soot, and reduce sulphides in diesel fuels. This regulation poses great challenges for truck manufacturers, engine manufacturers and oil suppliers. For example, heavy-duty commercial vehicle engine manufacturers in response to this regulation must increase the appropriate particulate filtration system, re-engineering of nitrogen oxide emissions control, and phase
